Based on the excellent 2009 vintage, this Tuscan red originates in the terroirs of the Maremma zone, southwest of Sienna and Florence, and just south of Bolgheri. It was elaborated by Chartier in collaboration with Petra Wines. The sangiovese, its main varietal, is completed by merlot and cabernet, which gives it a complex, expressive, and quite rich aromatic profile, where one will taste plums, coffee, licorice and basil. The attack is quasi-luscious, with a voluptuous texture, fat tannins and a long finish. A wine could hardly be more typically Italian! Drink before 2016 and serve at 18-19 ºC. It will shine brightly with pasta served with sundried tomatoes pesto or a beef filet marinated in coffee.
Origin / Terroir / Vinification
When I sampled from the various vats at Petra Wines, on the hills of the Maremma, in southwestern Tuscany, Pascal Chatonnet introduced me to beautiful lots from 2009 that perfectly fitted the aromatic profile I was following. This allowed me to create a more mature wine that could hardly be any more typical of a Tuscan sangiovese, and yet still fresh despite the amplitude of its texture. A 12 month-long casking with a certain ratio of new one- and two-year old barrels made sure that there would not be a woody dominant, only the best of what a Tuscan sangiovese has to offer.
